Species: piperita

Common Names: Peppermint, hortela, mint, menta, mentha montana, menthe, nan

General Description: Peppermint is well known in the western world as a tangy-tasting chewable tablet that relieves abdominal gas, nausea and stomach pain related to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The relief is due to the plant's carminative nature (it has properties that dispel gas and bloating). The plant itself is actually derived from water mint and spearmint, dating back to the mid-18th century. It is widely grown today for its fragrant oil.
Peppermint has been used for centuries in traditional herbal medicine.

Location: Today it is cultivated in Europe, Western and Central Asia for the production of menthol, which is used in the pharmaceutical industry for many different medications.

Uses: Peppermint is best known as an herb that suppresses symptoms of indigestion; as an antispasmodic, it helps relieve stomach and intestinal cramps. It actually acts on the muscles in the intestinal wall and relaxes them, thus creating a soothing response. Peppermint is a cooling herb whose properties also help ease inflamed tissues and inhibit bacteria and microorganisms.

Peppermint has some important nutritional value. It is a source of manganese, vitamin C and vitamin A, which includes a high concentration of carotenoids, including beta-carotene.

Finally, there are a number of additional uses for this herb. Peppermint is a very popular flavoring agent; it is used in a variety of cough medicines to not only help improve the flavor but also because it helps soothe bronchial tissue and that, in turn, eases coughing. Because it has relaxing and soothing properties, it is also used to treat nervous insomnia, stress, anxiety and general restlessness. Peppermint has been used as a folk remedy to treat earaches, dissolve gallstones, and ease muscle cramping of all kinds.

Peppermint is sold in a variety of forms, as a tincture, tea, essential oil, oil capsules, and tablets. Peppermint has the distinction of being the world's oldest medicine, with archeologists finding evidence of its use going back at least ten thousand years.
