Dogs have a difficult time telling their humans when they are in pain. Naturally dogs tend to mask or minimize any pain they may be feeling. In the wild if a dog were to show signs of sickness or pain they may be viewed as a weak by their pack. Dog's showing signs of pain also tend to become prayed upon by other stronger animals.
Being an owner of a dog, you have a unique relationship with your pet, and can detect subtle changes in your dogs behavior. Minor pain may be difficult to detect, some things you would look for in a dog experiencing minor or even chronic pain would be. Changes in his or her activity levels; ask yourself questions like. Why does my dog not look forward to walks as much as she once did? Why does my dog seem unhappy or mope around? Does your dog wag their tail less or is he grooming less?

When my dog Mary was about 14 I could tell that she was slowing down, and beginning to experience pain from arthritis. I think some of her pain was exacerbated by the fact that she had hip dysplasia as a puppy/young dog. It was difficult seeing my dog slow down, and become less active because she was in pain. I first started by seeking advice from my vet and basically was told that it really was just part of Mary growing old and was offered prescriptions for pain relievers, I decided to wait on any prescription pain relievers and look for other possible solutions. I do not have anything against prescription pharmaceutical pain relievers. At that point, and still today, I do not feel that the risks involved with pharmaceuticals, outweighed that her pain did not yet seem intense enough or stop her from daily activities.
I started by reading more about natural pain remedies for dogs, and realized that glucosamine and chondroitin can be used in dogs much the same way that humans use these natural supplements. I also looked closely at Mary's diet and discovered, what I thought was a high quality dog food, really was full of preservatives and low grade grains; these grains were only empty calories and probably added to her joint inflammation. After learning more about what is in a high quality food I quickly changed Mary's diet, to a food full of Natural antioxidants, omega 3's, high quality protein, with a good mix of fruits and vegetables; Soon Mary had more energy, her coat looked better, and her overall state of being was better. I also noticed that her pain seemed reduced.
Mary will be 17 in just a few months, this is really getting up in years for a Lab/Ches mix, but she still seems happy and content however, I am now using some natural over the counter pain relievers in conjunction with vitamins, herbs, and aspirin on the days that she seems to be in more pain.
If you should choose to give your dog aspirin, make sure you know the correct aspirin dosage for dogs, always start with a low dosage first. I personally use baby aspirin, one of these low dose aspirin is perfect for Marys weight. Slip your baby aspirin inside of a homemade dog treat and many dogs won't even know they are taking it. For more finicky eaters buy chewable aspirin made just for dogs.
